Few individuals know as a lot about franchises as Sigourney Weaver. The Oscar-nominated legend currently has three big ones underneath her belt—Ghostbusters, Alien, and Avatar—and subsequent 12 months, she’s adding a fourth: Star Wars. “It was not my intention to discover a fourth franchise,” Weaver lately mentioned. “I didn’t ever think about that I’d enter the Star Wars world.”
What modified? Properly, Weaver is likely one of the new additions in subsequent 12 months’s Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu. And, in an excellent interview with Empire, Weaver explains why she determined to go to a galaxy far, far-off.
“It’s all the time the script,” Weaver mentioned. “So [with] The Mandalorian and Grogu, it was not my intention to discover a fourth franchise, I didn’t ever think about that I’d enter the Star Wars world. However what’s fascinating about Star Wars now’s they’re not attempting to do the Star Wars to finish all Star Wars. They’re letting the universe exist, and inform[ing] actually fascinating tales inside that.”
That’s definitely a pleasant option to put issues in regard to Star Wars, isn’t it? For the previous few years (and sort of kick-started by the reaction to Rian Johnson’s The Final Jedi), the franchise has floundered looking for its footing. And perhaps that’s as a result of, as Weaver mentioned, they have been all the time looking for “the Star Wars to finish all Star Wars.” (Star Peace? We digress.) And so, by focusing the story—like with The Mandalorian and Grogu and the seemingly separate Star Wars: Starfighter—Weaver is suggesting staying outdoors the field would be the key to reinvigorating the franchise.
As for her position, Weaver credit the movie’s author and director, Jon Favreau, with bringing her in. “I feel Jon Favreau thought, ‘Okay, we would like this very robust character. Let’s make it a lady,’” Weaver mentioned. “I’m unsure it was purported to be a lady. I feel once more, lately, they typically suppose, ‘What do I must do to make this appear extra well timed?’ and now, as a result of girls are doing all the things, hooray for us. [But] I simply fell in love with the script and mentioned, ‘I don’t know something about this world.’ Jon mentioned, ‘Properly, you’ll be able to watch the sequence,’ and I mentioned, ‘Oh, there’s a sequence?!’”
That, proper there, is why Weaver’s perspective on Star Wars is so fascinating. She didn’t even know this film was based mostly on a TV sequence. She’s coming at it with contemporary eyes. And if she thinks this film places issues on the appropriate path, that’s definitely encouraging.
Weaver can subsequent be seen in Avatar: Hearth and Ash, in theaters December 19. The Mandalorian and Grogu opens on Might 22, 2026.
